A second section focuses on "The Dangers of Mystical Experience," in which Caplan claims that many seekers mistake the mystical experience itself for enlightenment; she and the teachers she interviews all assert that enlightenment always involves gaining some knowledge about self and others. The third section, "Corruption and Consequence," focuses on the nature of power and corruption; the fourth section, "Navigating the Mine Field: Preventing Dangers on the Path," provides a survey of the ways in which practitioners can avoid the "pitfalls of false enlightenment." Fun reading for someone that knows nothing about welding. It kept me form getting in trouble with gas torch.

I knew that there had been many advancements in welding technology and I wanted to get an understanding of the currently available welding technologies, including Stick, Tig, Mig, and plasma arc cutting. I saw so many choices on the market and I had no idea what to buy to set up a very simple basic welding capability for occasional light weight welds. The book does a great job of explaining each of the available welding technologies, explaining how to weld different kinds of metals, safety, tips on each kind of welding, and even what basic tools you need to buy to set up a basic welding capability.I have read several "for DUMMIES" books. They are all a great and very informative read and this book lives up to the tradition.

This was a great book to get me started. The author is very safety conscious and I really felt prepared for further education on the subject. Nothing beats in-person instruction, but this really was an informative book and broadened my knowledge.

Bought it for my boyfriend who is taking a welding class for the first time ever. He absolutely loves it!!! He reads the book a little each night and has class on Saturday. He said that the material in the book is easy to comprehend and explained very well. Highly suggest!

Not that I want my friends to see me reading a Dummies book, but the info is very good, well indexed, and clear.

Well written very comprehensive. But could use illistrations showing proper way to hold torch ie angle to joint and direction of bead.

Loving the book. I'm learning and the book my teacher wants me to read is a super dense textbook so it's great to have something else that is a survey of the entire subject but more of a layman's guide to.

"Variation" What is the best way to manage the development of software? Should the problem be broken up into small pieces for programmers working independently, thus enhancing variation, or should there be a centralized hierarchy of programmers ruled by a chain of command? The authors show how the decentralized creation of variation combined with the centralized maintenance of standards was the key to the success of the Linux "open source software" project, which brought together thousands of volunteers in cyberspace to produce an operating system that can outperform Microsoft's.

"Interaction" Why did northern Italy prosper while southern Italy remained poor? Recognizing the internal interactions of a Complex Adaptive System -- be it a national region, a company, or a nonprofit group -- reveals vitalnetworks of trust. Axelrod and Cohen explain that in successful adaptive systems, rich networks of horizontal linkages foster cooperation and provide an advantage over other less cooperatively networked groups. In the case of Italy, voluntary associations created networks of trust in the Middle Ages that became northern Italy's critical advantage over the south.

Axelrod (The Evolution of the Corporation) and Cohen (a consultant to the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center), both professors at the University of Michigan, aim to draw on the principles of evolutionary biology, computer science and social design to explain the functioning of "complex adaptive systems" (specifically businesses), and how to improve them. They explore such abstract issues as whether to encourage variation in a rapidly changing situation (whether it refers to a diversity of products or problem-solving approaches, variety is defined as "the raw material for adaptation"); the impact of manipulating interactions (with respect to time as well as both physical and conceptual space) in an organization; and how to select and support the most viable individuals, teams, systems or business strategies that emerge. Although their schematic approach and well-drawn anecdotal examples yield pragmatic insights, Axelrod and Cohen rely on somewhat idiosyncratic terminology to make their key points: "Agents of a variety of types use their strategies in patterned interaction, with each other and with artifacts" (authors' emphasis).
